Evan Dunham vs Rick Glenn

A solid, if unspectacular performance by Dunham to get the decision victory. If the whole fight was like the last minute, it would have been a blinder. Saw plenty of Glenn’s bravery and resilience, but not really what he’s got to offer offensively. Will have to see what he’s got at Featherweight if he drops back down.

Uriah Hall vs Derek Brunson

Derek Brunson is a bad dude. After an opening minute of clinch work, the first punch Brunson landed was a sniper accurate left hand that dropped Hall. The stoppage was possibly slightly on the early side but not so much that the booing from the crowd was justified, but meatheads gonna meathead.

Poirier vs Johnson

Urgh. Johnson started the faster and got the knock out finish. He then shot himself straight to the top of the douche bag list with his celebration. Then in his post-fight interview he says he deserves Conor McGregor money. Pfft. I don’t specifically root AGAINST many fighters in particular, but I’m looking forward to supporting whoever is facing Johnson next.

Not much jumping out at me in terms of betting on this card, so I’m just having an interest bet on the top three fights.

Poirier vs Johnson

Johnson is a tough and talented guy, but he’s on a two fight losing strak, and he’s facing a Dustin Poirier who’s hit some real form since moving back up to 155lbs. Got to back Poirier to extend his streak to 5.

Uriah Hall vs Derek Brunson

This could be an absolute thriller. Brunson has stopped his last three opponents and hasn’t tasted defeat since suffering his only UFC loss to Yoel Romero in January 2014. Hall hasn’t made quite the impact we perhaps thought he would when we first saw him ice that dude on his TUF debut, but he is still a killer, capable of ending the fight in a heartbeat. Going with Bruson on form alone, but it’ll be one I watch from the edge of my seat.

Evan Dunham vs Rick Glenn

Glenn is stepping in as a late replacement for Abel Trujillio. Although he has a plenty of experience and has held the WSOF title, there’s no underestimating the UFC jitters, and Dunham is an old hand. Have to back the UFC vet to welcome the newcomer with a win.

bet£20 returning £66.05

UFC 203 – Miocic vs Overeem – Results

Jessica Andrade vs Joanne Calderwood

Argh. Jojo was weathering an early storm on the ground and was almost at the bell at the end of round 1, when she fell victim to a guillotine choke. Gutted for her, and for two of my three bets.

Uriah Faber vs Jimmie Rivera

Solid performance by Rivera, taking all three rounds. Certainly puts him in in the title picture and a big statement in his next fight, whoever that’s against could put him at the front of the line.

CM Punk vs Mickey Gall

Well, thanks for playing Phillip. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Poor fucker. Seems like a really nice guy, but if he wanted to be a fighter, he took the wrong career path a decade or more ago. Whatever he says, I’d be surprised if we see another appearance from him after that. Talking of nice guys, Gall sounds like a good kid too. Calling Sage Northcutt out now. Hope he gets it.

Fabricio Werdum vs Travis Browne

WTF is going on?!? Is Werdum the most creative striker in the Heavyweight division now? I guess that’s what can happen if you’re so much better on the ground than everyone else. He maybe needs to sharpen up his takedowns because he seems to be struggling to bridge the two ranges. Another win banked, but after a thrilling start, it petered out a bit. That was until after the final bell. Werdum was already reacting to the booing from a fairly shitty crowd, when Edmund Traverdyan said something that prompted a push kick from him, albeit a fairly light one. Lots of squaring up, and Babalu enters from the Brazilian corner to get involved too. Crazy scenes.

Stipe Miocic vs Allistair Overeem

Fuuuuckk. I thought Allistair had it when he straightened Stipe out for a split second, but he went for the guillotine and didn’t finish. For the rest of the round it looked like any strike from either guy could end the other’s night, but Stipe was the one that got there first. Great performance. After the fight Allistair claimed he felt a tap from the guillotine, but Joe Rogan and the replay truck called him out on it straight away. How embarrassing?! Afterwards Rogan made the point that Overeem had just been unconscious, so maybe he dreamed it while he was out.

So, 3/5 but a loss in each bet means nothing back.

Bet 1 – £10 returning £0.00

Jimmie Rivera to beat Uriah Faber – win

Joanne Calderwood to beat Jessica Andrade – lose

Bet 2 – £10 returning £0.00

Alistair Overeem  to beat Stipe Miocic – lose

Bet 3 – £5 returning £0.00

UFC 203 – Miocic vs Overeem – Preview

Really torn on some of these fights, with several of my favourite fighters clashing. It’s going to be really difficult to pick sides.

Stipe Miocic vs Alistair Overeem

As much as I like Miocic, I was reluctantly on Werdum to beat him back in May. Although there’s no doubt he’s fought and put away a decent list of opponents, it does feel like he’s missed out on facing some huge names on the rosta, and they don’t come much bigger than Overeem. As much as I like the sound of Stipe’s 1st defence of his title in his home city, I feel like Alistair is going to spoil the party.

Fabricio Werdum vs Travis Browne

As I said above, I was backing Werdum in his title defence against Miocic, and as much as I like the current champ, it still feels like an upset. Werdum should get himself back in the win column, especially given the relatively short notice Browne is stepping in at.

CM Punk vs Mickey Gall

I keep changing my mind on how I feel about this fight, and also on CM Punk himself. I have absolutely no interest in professional wrestling so had no idea who this fella was until he got signed by the UFC a couple of years ago. When I heard about him, my first reaction was to hope the ACTOR got his ass kicked by whichever FIGHTER he eventually ended up facing. Having seen Gall on ‘Looking For A Fight’ I was happy to get behind him to spoil Punk’s long awaited debut. With all that said, everything I’ve seen of Punk makes me really like the chap. I do still think he’s going to lose, but I’m hoping he does well enough to earn everyone’s respect and buy himself a second fight down the line.

Uriah Faber vs Jimmie Rivera

It feels like we’re one bad loss away from Faber announcing his retirement. I’m really hoping we get to see him settle his beef in the cage with former teammate TJ Dillashaw before he does hang them up. However, if I’m right on the first count, we may never see that, because Rivera is riding an 18 fight win streak and has won three inside the Octagon in just over a year. I’m going to be backing Rivera to win this fight.

Jessica Andrade vs Joanne Calderwood

I reluctantly bet against Jo Calderwood in her last outing and couldn’t help be pleased that I was wrong. I really like her as a fighter and as a character, so I really didn’t mind the bet going down. Although I expect Andrade to be a tough fight for her, I’m going to get on her this time out.

There’s nothing particularly backable on the prelims so I’m sticking to the main card and splitting it up like so:

Bet 1 – £10 returning £36.00

Jimmie Rivera to beat Uriah Faber

Joanne Calderwood to beat Jessica Andrade

Bet 2 – £10 returning £39.00

Alistair Overeem  to beat Stipe Miocic

Fabricio Werdum to beat Travis Browne

Mickey Gall to beat CM Punk

Bet 3 – £5 returning £70.20

Jimmie Rivera to beat Uriah Faber

Joanne Calderwood to beat Jessica Andrade

Alistair Overeem  to beat Stipe Miocic

Fabricio Werdum to beat Travis Browne

Mickey Gall to beat CM Punk

Rustam Khaboliv vs Leandro Silva

Khabilov edged the decision in this close opener to get me off to a winning start. Not what you’d call a thriller, but I’ll take it. Rustam’s calling out top guys like Barboza or Pettis, but he needs to deliver more exciting performances to work his way up the card.

Scott Askham vs Jack Hermansson

Another really tight fight, but more entertaining than the last. Unfortunately for me, it went Hermansson’s way and a couple of my bets go down.

Jarjis Danho vs Christian Colombo

Due to a point deduction due to an illegal knee, this one goes to a draw. I’ll take that as it doesn’t kill any bets and were it not for the point deduction, Danho would have lost.

Taylor Lapilus vs beat Leandro Issa

A solid performance by Taylor Lapilus, winning all three rounds. Looking forward to seeing more from the Frenchman. With Alex Enlund vs Martin Buschkamp being cancelled late, this gives me a small win for a Lapilus / Khabilov double.

Veronica Macedo vs Ashlee Evans-Smith

Macedo got off to a decent start and may have nicked the 1st round, but the size and experience advantage of Evans-Smith told as the fight went on and the stoppage in the 3rd round was inevitable. Would like to see Macedo again but at 115lbs.

Peter Sobotta vs Nicolas Dalby

A solid and dominant performance from Peter Sobotta. Very entertaining fight and another small bet banked for me.

Jessin Ayari vs Jim Wallhead

Tough scrap, and no arguments about the decision going to Ayari, but it could have gone either way. My all English bet was already dead, but the all German bet is still live.

Nick Hein vs Tae Hyun Bang

Yet another really close fight. Hein did just about enough to win each round, but it wasn’t a great spectacle. Happy that my triple on Hein, Sobotta and Ayari came in, however it comes.

Ryan Bader vs Illr Latifi

No financial interest remaining in this fight, so I was watching as a neutral when Latifi walked into Bader’s knee and knocked himself out.

Alexander Gustafsson vs Jan Blachowicz

After an opening round that cold have gone either way, Alex took over, dominating Jan on the ground. One way traffic and an easy job for the judges to give it to the Swede.

Andrei Arlovski vs Josh Barnett

In the 1st round, both fighters came close to finishing the other with some heavy strikes. In the 2nd and 3rd rounds, Barnett made his advantage on the ground pay and submitted Arlovski midway through the 3rd. Great fight.

So overall, a small profit again, due to the Germans all winning, and none of the Danes and Brazilians winning.
